Unlock a PDF (remove a password you know)

On your device

PDF files only

Unlock PDF removes protection from a PDF you're allowed to change. PDFs can be locked in two ways: an open password, which stops anyone viewing the file until they type it, and a permissions password, which lets the file open but blocks printing, copying or editing. PDFEdit can remove both, but for an open password you must know it: we can't crack, guess or recover a forgotten password. You'll be asked to confirm you have the right to modify each file. Unlocking happens in your browser, so neither your PDF nor the password you type is uploaded. Free, no sign-up.

FAQ

Can you unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?

No. PDFEdit can't crack, guess or recover passwords. Ask the person who sent you the file.

What's the difference between an open password and a permissions password?

An open password is required just to view the file. A permissions password lets anyone open it but restricts printing, copying or editing.

Why do I have to confirm I have the right to modify the file?

The document's owner set the password or restrictions. Only unlock files you own or are authorized to change.

What if my PDF can't be unlocked?

PDFEdit unlocks files that use standard PDF encryption. For other encryption types you'll see a message saying it can't be unlocked in your browser. We never send the file to a server instead.

Is my PDF or password uploaded?

No. Both stay in your browser.
