Password protect a PDF

On your device

PDF files only

Protect PDF adds an open password to your PDF, so only people who know it can view the file. It's a sensible step before emailing a tax return, contract or medical record. The file is encrypted with AES-256 using your password, and PDF readers will ask for the password before showing anything. Send the password through a different channel, such as a text message, not in the same email as the file. PDFEdit encrypts the file in your browser, so neither the PDF nor the password is uploaded, and we don't store the password anywhere. If you forget it, it can't be recovered. Free, no sign-up.

FAQ

How is my PDF protected?

The file is encrypted with AES-256 and your password. Anyone who opens it must enter the password first.

What if I forget the password?

It can't be recovered. PDFEdit doesn't store or see your password. Keep it somewhere safe and keep an unprotected original if you might need it.

Can I remove the password later?

Yes. Open the file in Unlock PDF, enter the password and download a copy without it.

Does this stop people from printing or copying?

No. This tool sets an open password, which controls who can view the file. It doesn't add separate printing or copying restrictions.

Is my PDF or password uploaded?

No. Both stay on your device.
