Flatten a PDF

On your device

PDF files only

Flatten PDF turns form fields and annotations into a fixed part of the page. After you fill in a PDF form, the fields stay editable: anyone can click in and change an answer, and different viewers may display them differently. Flattening locks the current values into the page so the document looks the same everywhere and can't be changed by accident. It's a good last step before you send a completed form, print a marked-up file or upload to a system that handles form fields poorly. Dynamic XFA forms aren't supported. PDFEdit flattens in your browser, nothing is uploaded. Free, no sign-up.

FAQ

What does flattening a PDF do?

It takes form fields and annotations (such as comments, highlights and stamps) and makes them part of the page. They look the same but can no longer be edited.

When should I flatten a PDF?

Before sending a completed form, printing a marked-up document, or uploading to a portal that mishandles form fields.

Can I undo flattening?

Not in the flattened file. Your original isn't changed, so keep it if you may need to edit the fields again.

Does it work with XFA forms?

No. XFA is an older dynamic form technology still found in some government and tax PDFs, and it isn't supported.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Flattening runs in your browser.
